HLSI, with photographer Ruth Corney, presents an online version of the exhibition of photographs originally planned to coincide with the Highgate Festival. This exhibition developed from a project begun in the HLSI Archives to document the many Highgate women aged 80 or more who have made their mark on their community or further afield, who deserve our notice, have done remarkable things and have lived life to the full – among them working women, refugees, social activists, scientists, mothers, teachers, actors and writers.
It will feature a short film of the large-scale silk banners printed with Ruth Corney’s beautiful and touching photographs with music by Judith Weir. Ruth has long been fascinated by the faces of older women. ‘Over the last 2 years I have photographed 18 wonderful women. It has been a joy to meet them, to talk to them and to find out about their lives. My own life has been enriched by their vivacity, wisdom and generosity of spirit.’
The exhibition will be available to view on the HLSI website during the Highgate Festival, 20-28 June 2020.
Copies of the photographs and texts of the interviews are held in the HLSI Archives.
