Recital celebrating the career of soprano Jennifer Vyvyan
Soprano-of-the-moment Verity Wingate, who stars at Garsington this summer as the Governess in Britten’s Turn of the Screw, gives a glittering recital paying tribute to a star soprano of the 1950s: Jennifer Vyvyan, for whom the role of the Governess was first written. Expect opera and songs by Mozart, Handel, Purcell, Mahler, Britten (with whom Vyvyan worked closely) alongside narrations by the music critic Michael White, who is Vyvyan’s biographer and knows the secret ups and downs of her extraordinary but short life. Vyvyan lived in Hampstead, her surviving family live in Highgate. So this is story of local relevance as well as national significance.
All ticket sales will be donated to the Disaster Emergency Committee in aid of the war in Ukraine.
